A proximity input never changes. The first electrical check is supply voltage between the sensor’s documented positive and 0 V conductors. The exercise grades the complete measurement plan—state, mode, placement, range and expected evidence—before a tool is applied.

Prove sensor power independently from its PNP or NPN output behaviour. One measurement should answer one branch of the fault tree; collecting numbers without a decision rule creates more ambiguity.
