Studio 5000 licensing

How much does Studio 5000 cost?

Rockwell Automation does not publish a list price for Studio 5000 Logix Designer. You buy it as a subscription or a perpetual license, and the price depends on the edition and add-ons. For a real number, ask an authorized Rockwell distributor for a quote.

Last checked 25 October 2026 against Rockwell's own pages. Independent guide, not affiliated with Rockwell Automation.

The short answer

  • Price: not published by Rockwell for any Logix Designer edition. Quotes come from distributors or Rockwell's commerce portal.
  • Editions: Mini, Lite, Standard, Standard Networx, Full, Professional and Service.
  • ControlLogix: needs Standard or higher. Mini and Lite cover CompactLogix, Compact GuardLogix and LogixEdge only.
  • License types: subscription (timed) or perpetual (includes the first year of support).
  • Free from Rockwell: Connected Components Workbench Standard Edition, for Micro800 controllers only.
  • Free practice: you can learn Allen-Bradley-style ladder logic in a browser before you pay for anything.

You will find dollar figures on forums and reseller sites. We could not confirm any of them on Rockwell's site or an authorized distributor's page, so we do not repeat them here.

Studio 5000 Logix Designer editions compared

Taken from Rockwell's Studio 5000 ordering guide (publication 9324-QR001M-EN-P, October 2026). All editions support LogixEdge, CompactLogix and Compact GuardLogix. Licenses are concurrent and activate the current version back to version 20.05.

Which edition do you need?

  • CompactLogix, ladder only: Mini is the smallest edition that fits.
  • CompactLogix with structured text, function blocks or safety: Lite includes those editors.
  • Any ControlLogix or GuardLogix work: Standard or higher.
  • Process work with PhaseManager or SequenceManager: Full or Professional.
  • Maintenance staff who only go online and look: Service, which uploads, downloads and views but does not edit.
  • Micro800 controllers (Micro820, Micro850, Micro870): you do not need Studio 5000. Use Connected Components Workbench.
  • Learning ladder logic at home: you may not need a license yet. See the free options below.

Subscription or perpetual license?

Rockwell lets you choose. A subscription is a timed license, and Rockwell says it lets you change your edition and add-ons. A perpetual license is a one-time purchase that does not expire and includes the first year of software support.

New versions are only available while you have Rockwell Automation Software Support coverage. With a perpetual license, that means paying for support each year after the first if you want updates. Factor that into any quote you compare.

Logix Emulate and FactoryTalk Logix Echo

Both let you run Logix code without a physical controller. They are add-ons, not part of most editions.

  • Studio 5000 Logix Emulate was included with Professional up to version 36. It is sold separately for Full, Standard, Standard Networx and Service, and is not available for Lite or Mini.
  • FactoryTalk Logix Echo is sold separately for every edition. It emulates ControlLogix 5590, ControlLogix 5580, GuardLogix 5580, CompactLogix 5380 and Compact GuardLogix 5380 controllers. Rockwell offers a 30-day trial after you sign in.
  • Rockwell publishes no price for either.

Free and low-cost options

  • Connected Components Workbench (CCW) Standard Edition: a free download from Rockwell for Micro800 controllers. It includes a demo version of the Micro800 Simulator. The Developer Edition is a paid annual subscription.
  • Studio 5000 trial: we found no free Logix Designer trial on Rockwell's pages. The release notes describe a seven-day grace period when an activation cannot be found, which is not a trial.
  • Student licenses: we found no public Rockwell page offering one. Ask your school or employer, since many already hold licenses for their labs.
  • Older controllers (SLC 500, MicroLogix): these use RSLogix 500, not Studio 5000. See is RSLogix 500 free?
  • Download steps and system requirements: see the Studio 5000 download guide.

Before you pay for a license

Practice Logix-style ladder in your browser first

If you are learning, the expensive part of Studio 5000 is not the ladder logic. It is the license, a Windows PC and a controller to download to. You can learn the logic without any of them.

  • Write rungs with Allen-Bradley instruction names: XIC, XIO, OTE, OTL, OTU, TON, TOF and CTU.
  • Run them against simulated machines and see whether the machine does what it should.
  • The first 6 of 12 Allen-Bradley lessons and 32 practice scenarios are free. No card needed.
  • Works on Windows, Mac and Chromebook, with nothing to install.

It is not Rockwell software. It does not open or export .ACD files, and you will still need Studio 5000 to program a real controller.
