VFD Flying Start Explained

Flying start—also called speed search or catch on the fly—estimates the speed and direction of an already rotating motor before the drive reapplies controlled torque.

Why it matters

The behavior behind the parameter.

Fans, pumps and high-inertia machines can still be spinning after a coast stop or supply interruption. Starting from zero frequency against that rotating field can create a current surge, torque shock or trip.

  • It is a restart function, not an acceleration shortcut.
  • Direction and residual speed must be detected before torque is established.
  • The permissive and machine risk assessment still decide whether automatic restart is allowed.
